World Magazine’s online version, WORLDmag.com, has an article on the worship theses recently published by the LCMS Council of Presidents. Here’s the link.

The article makes a few interesting and valid points, like, “These intramural conflicts consume a lot of energy, and to the outside world they can often appear to be irrelevant to the point of silliness.” Which is all the more reason why we should be taking care to resolve our differences over our theology and practice of worship. The sooner the better. “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4.3). Make every effort.
One problem I see with the article is that it seems to assume a one-to-one correspondence between traditional forms of worship and biblical truth. In an article titled, “On the Nature of the Church’s Confession” (89), Hermann Sasse argued that even churches which do in fact have historic liturgical forms can and do abandon biblical truth. Consequently having the so-called “correct” liturgical order does not guarantee preservation of the truth.
